Mais derrière le succès se cachent des manipulations boursières, des introductions en bourse illégales et un vaste système de blanchiment d’argent. Condamné par la justice américaine, il purge finalement 22 mois de prison.
Après sa condamnation, Jordan Belfort se réinvente : il devient conférencier international et motivateur, monétisant son parcours hors norme et son expérience du monde financier, tout en restant une figure controversée, symbole des dérives du capitalisme moderne.
