Why healthcare needs cultural competence | David Bahibanda | TEDxNHS

Cultural competency in healthcare starts with understanding. What do everyday cultural practices teach us about health and healing? In this talk, David, a passionate medical student, shares his personal experience with calabash chalk, a tradition from his Congolese background. He explores how it reveals the hidden power of cultural understanding in healthcare and invites us all to pause, reflect, and ask: how can culture help us build a more compassionate and inclusive health service?

David Bahibanda is a final-year medical student at Hull York Medical School, passionate about cultural competency and ensuring everyone feels seen. He has presented a systematic review poster on Calabash chalk at both regional and national conferences. Beyond medicine, he continues to use his voice through open discussions to shed light on culture, identity, and representation within healthcare.
