Giethoorn is a small village in the province of Overijssel, in the northeast of the Netherlands. It’s famous because there are almost no roads in the old center—transport is mainly by boat or footpaths. The village is built around canals, and many houses are only accessible over tiny wooden bridges or by water.✅ Why is it called “The Venice of the North”?
Because of its many canals and picturesque waterways. Unlike Venice, it doesn’t have big stone palazzos—here you’ll see thatched-roof farmhouses, lush gardens, and wooden bridges (over 170 of them).

Giethoorn was founded around 1230 by peat diggers.The canals were originally dug to transport peat, forming the waterways we see today.
Over centuries, it grew into a peaceful farming village and later became a famous tourist destination.

About 2,600 residents live in Giethoorn.

By Car: About 1.5 hours drive from Amsterdam.
By Train: Take a train to Steenwijk station, then a bus or taxi.
