Tensions are on the rise in Cameroon after President Paul Biya’s opponent, Issa Tchiroma, claimed election victory. As analysts predicted Biya to win, protesters hit the streets and clashed with police in the country’s economic hub, Douala. A heavy security presence was seen in the city following the unrest. Cameroon’s independent election body and the constitutional court are yet to declare the result. However, the protesters claimed that the country’s electoral process is not credible. The recent protests and clashes followed an early claim of victory by Presidential candidate Tchiroma, who received backing from a coalition of opposition parties and civic groups. The 76-year-old is Biya’s ally turned foe. He was a government spokesperson and minister of employment under Biya.---
