The introduction of genetically engineered seeds in the mid-1990s fundamentally changed the economics of American farming. It locked farmers into a razor-and-blade business model of patented seeds and proprietary chemicals, exploded farm debt to a record $600 billion, and created the conditions for the largest corporate agricultural acquisition in history. This is the story of a former Wall Street analyst turned whistleblower and activist who called out a $63 billion acquisition made without a shareholder vote. She argues we can't change the food system by auditing our shopping carts alone. We must also examine the systemic financial levers that determine how we direct capital, demand transparency, and allocate subsidies. Robyn O'Brien is a former Wall Street food industry analyst turned whistleblower, who became one of the first major voices to connect the introduction of genetically engineered crops and glyphosate-based herbicides to the rise of food allergies, childhood cancers, and chronic disease in the United States. She is the author of The Unhealthy Truth and the founder of rePlant Capital, a regenerative agriculture lender providing affordable capital to farmers transitioning to organic and regenerative practices. She has appeared before Congress, briefed government health agencies, and testified in state legislatures on food policy. Her work connecting financial analysis to food system reform has been featured in the New York Times, Forbes, and CNN, and she holds an MBA from Rice University's Jones Graduate School of Business.
