原作は、虚淵玄が2009年に刊行した小説『アイゼンフリューゲル』。
〝小説家・虚淵玄〟の想いが詰まったこの物語を、
これまでも『鋼の錬金術師』や『機動戦士ガンダム00』シリーズなど“戦争と個人”のドラマ、
そしてキャラクターを描き続けてきた水島精二が総監督として全体を統括。
またアクションからドラマまで確かな演出で評価を得る小松田大全が監督を務め、
A-1 Pictures とともに本作の要である龍と航空機の空戦チェイスを迫力の映像に仕立てあげる。
さらにキャラクターデザインは『Fate/stay night』『Fate/Grand Order』『月姫 -A piece of blue glass moon-』などの武内崇が担当し、魅力的なキャラクターたちが深いドラマを紡ぎ出す。
観る者の心を熱くする空戦（アクション）と、胸を締め付ける人間模様（ドラマ）――

■ストーリー
この空の先には――何があるんだろう。
まだ大空が巨大な翼を備えた龍のものであった時代。
数年前に隣国と交わした熾烈な戦火の記憶も生々しいシルヴァーナ共和国では、
龍たちから空の覇権を奪い取ろうと、その速さに挑戦する者たちがいた。
類まれな操縦能力を持つパイロット、カール・シュニッツは世界初のジェットエンジン搭載型航空機・ブリッツフォーゲルを駆り、
最も速き龍・帝凰龍（カイザードラッヘ）を越える速度で飛翔するという、前人未踏の領域に挑戦する。
何故、人間は挑むのか――これはひとりの男が自由を求め闘う、ひとつの「夢」の物語。
