Bosnia mining town residents test positive for elevated lead levels
More than 200 residents of Vares, in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, have tested positive for elevated lead levels in their blood, including children.Many live near ore-processing facilities that resumed operations six years ago.
Locals suspect nearby mining activity may be responsible, though the company – Dundee Precious Metals – says no link has been established and it is in compliance with regulations.
A clinical pharmacologist warns that any level of lead in the blood is dangerous and can cause serious health problems. Bosnian authorities are conducting further tests on more than 300 children.
