Dikutip dari Anadolu Agency, Lee lahir pada 8 Desember 1963 di sebuah desa pegunungan di Andong, Provinsi Gyeongsang Utara.
Ia merupakan anak kelima dari tujuh bersaudara dan tumbuh dalam kondisi ekonomi yang sulit.
Di usia 13 tahun, Lee mengalami kecelakaan kerja saat menjadi buruh pabrik, yang menyebabkan cedera permanen pada lengannya akibat mesin press.
Meski sempat membolos sekolah untuk membantu keluarganya, Lee berhasil menyelesaikan pendidikan dan meraih beasiswa penuh untuk belajar hukum.
Ia lulus ujian pengacara pada 1986 dan menekuni pekerjaan di bidang tersebut selama dua dekade.
Karier politiknya baru dimulai pada 2005 ketika bergabung dengan Partai Uri, cikal bakal Partai Demokrat Korea.
Pada 2010, Lee terpilih sebagai Wali Kota Seongnam kemudian pada 2018 menjadi Gubernur Provinsi Gyeonggi.
Ia sempat maju sebagai calon presiden pada Pemilu 2022, namun kalah.
Gaya politik Lee yang agresif membuatnya dikenal sebagai tokoh kontroversial di Korea Selatan.
Salah satu janji kampanye Lee yang menuai sorotan adalah wacana penerapan pendapatan dasar universal pada pilpres 2022.
Kebijakan Ketua Partai Demokrat ini dianggap radikal oleh sebagian kalangan.
