Nepal races to find survivors as flood risks and losses mount
In Dhading, one of the hardest-hit areas from the Nepal floods, Al Jazeera's Jessica Washington reports the overflowing river has receded slightly but remains high and fast-moving. Some homes are reduced to bare foundations, swept into the river, while others left standing are caked in mud. Many residents also lost small shops on their ground floors, telling Washington all they have left are the clothes on their backs. Some had only just rebuilt their homes after losing them in the 2015 earthquake.In Kathmandu, Minelle Fernandez reports Nepal has asked India and China for specialist help, particularly for tunnel rescues after hydropower workers were trapped by rockfall. Authorities are reluctant to rule out the possibility of finding survivors, even as time runs short. Vehicular access to affected areas has improved from the initial helicopter-only reach, and aid, including hygiene supplies, is beginning to arrive. Risks persist: a landslide warning from China's side of the border put teams on high alert, prompting Nepal and China's foreign ministers to discuss real-time hydrometeorological data sharing.
