Australia to Let Users Opt Out of Social Media Algorithms: What Does it Mean? | FP Explains

Australia is preparing new rules that could give users the option to opt out of algorithmically recommended social media feeds. Under the proposed 'My Feed, My Way' framework, users aged 16 and above could choose to see content from accounts they deliberately follow instead of having platforms continuously recommend posts based on algorithmic predictions. The proposal is also part of a broader digital duty of care, which would place additional responsibilities on online platforms to address harmful content and could expose companies to penalties of more than A$100 million for serious non-compliance.
