Ryan Routh trial opens, Judge dismisses ‘politically charged’ questions

Nearly a year after prosecutors say he plotted to assassinate President Donald Trump, Ryan Routh is back in court for the first day of his trial. Both prosecutors and Routh, who is representing himself, are questioning jurors directly, which makes for an unusual dynamic that could make proceedings unpredictable. LiveNOW’s Andy Mac is learning more as FOX's Rebekah Castor reports from Florida. He also had the chance to speak with criminal defense attorney Nicole DeBorde as Routh appears to have begun his trial by directing some off-topic questions to the jury.

"None of the questions on your list have any bearing whatsoever. They were off base, sir, and have no relevance to jury selection," U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon said. When Routh attempted to speak in protest, Cannon warned him not to interrupt.

Routh faces a number of federal charges, including attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate and assaulting a federal officer as well as various gun violations. The charges carry a possible life sentence if he is found guilty.
