In June 1667, a Dutch fleet sailed straight into the heart of English naval power and delivered the Royal Navy its most humiliating defeat in history.
While peace negotiations in the Second Anglo-Dutch War stalled, Admiral Michiel de Ruyter led 80 Dutch warships and 4,000 troops towards the Thames and the Medway rivers – home of the English fleet. What followed was a raid so audacious that no Englishman was expecting it, and they would pay the price for not being prepared.
This is the story of the Raid on the Medway: two decades of Anglo-Dutch rivalry, a King's fatal decision, and the desperate defence of Chatham against overwhelming odds.
