What was the Miskito Kingdom and how did they become one of the Black Indian tribes of Central America? The Miskito originally descended from escaped African slaves on the coast of the Central American countries of Honduras and Nicaragua, a region that would later become known as the Miskito Coast. These Africans were of diverse origins and extensively intermixed with the indigenous Misumalpan tribes of the region creating a unique hybridized people with African and Indigenous Amerindian influences and they would go on to conquer most of the surrounding tribes and establish their own kingdom under a British protectorate, leading to a significant degree of British influence in the region. Although the independent kingdom would eventually be partitioned and annexed by their larger neighbors, the Miskito people still exist at over half a million strong and continue to practice their own culture and language.
