Drawing on her experience as a cancer survivor and her work confronting online disinformation, Melissa Fleming shows how profit‑driven algorithms spread medical lies, harm children’s mental health, amplify hate, and destabilize communities.
This talk argues that social media should be treated like a public‑health issue—focused on preventing harm, protecting the vulnerable, and putting human well‑being before profit.
Melissa Fleming is the UN's Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, overseeing crisis communication strategies, global campaigns, social media platforms, and multilingual news services. Her mission is to inform the world and inspire people to take action for a more just, peaceful, and sustainable future.
She has championed integrity and fought against misinformation and hate speech. She was behind the UN Global Principles for Information Integrity, an essential response to the challenges we face in a world saturated with noise and misinformation.
Previously, she worked for UNHCR to give a voice and visibility to refugees, displaced persons, and stateless individuals. She has also worked at the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
She is the author of the book “A Hope More Powerful than the Sea,” host of the UN podcast “Awake at Night,” and the creator of two TED Talks.
