Inspired by a recent performance of Ariadne auf Naxos at the BBC Proms, Matthew King explains why its possible to see Richard Strauss as a Mozartean figure in the 20th century, contrasting with his colleague and rival, Gustav Mahler who took a more Beethovenian approach. Matthew takes us on a whistle-stop tour of Strauss's career, starting with the great tone poems of the 1890s and progressing towards opera as his primary genre in the 20th century. The video discusses Strauss's remarkable collaboration with his librettist, Hugo von Hoffmannsthal, and his capacity to leap stylistically from expressionistic avant-gardism to popular styles, and from grand post-Wagnerian idioms to the Mozartean classicism of his late works. The video also discusses the curse of old age which robbed Strauss of Mahler's romantic glamour, and condemned him to living through the monstrous era of the Third Reich, before finally emerging in his eighties to the beautiful autumn of his late style. Finally, the discussion returns to Ariadne auf Naxos, composed at the middle-point of Strauss's career: an opera which blends high and low culture in a fascinating and wonderfully imaginative way.
There are many clips from Strauss's works in the video, in a variety of performances. The excerpt from Strauss's fabulous 2nd horn concerto, at the end of the video, comes from Dennis Brain's marvellous 1956 recording.
