China has suspended most fuel exports for October as Beijing moves to protect domestic fuel stocks amid a tightening global energy market. The decision by Chinese refiners to halt or cancel shipments of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel beyond Hong Kong and Macau could further tighten global refined-fuel supplies. Reuters reports that PetroChina cancelled several October gasoline and jet-fuel shipments, while Zhejiang Petrochemical did not schedule exports during the holiday week.

At the same time, the United States is pressuring France and Germany to release emergency diesel reserves, with Reuters reporting that Washington has asked the EU to release as much as 120 million barrels of diesel over six months. Europe is discussing potential stock releases amid disruptions to global fuel supplies.

The developments come against the backdrop of the wider global diesel shortage and energy crisis, with fuel supplies affected by disruptions involving the Middle East, Russia and China. Russia has also extended restrictions on diesel exports, adding further pressure to the international refined-fuel market.

Meanwhile, India has said it will continue its diesel exports and honor overseas petroleum-product commitments despite tightening global fuel markets. India's expanding refining capacity has increased its importance as a supplier of refined petroleum products to international markets.

In this video, we explain why China is restricting fuel exports, what the global diesel shortage means for energy security, why the US is asking Europe to release diesel reserves, and why India's refining capacity and diesel exports matter in the current energy crisis.
