What if honoring rest and community care after childbirth - as practiced in the Chinese tradition of zuo yuezi - is the key to transforming maternal health in America? The Chinese tradition of zuo yuezi, or “sitting the month,” recognizes that recovery from childbirth requires intentional rest, nourishment, and community support. In America, new mothers are often rushed back to work, fitness, and social obligations, leaving them depleted at the very moment they most need care. By embracing the wisdom of ancient postpartum traditions, we can reimagine maternal health not as an individual struggle, but as a collective responsibility. This shift has the power to reduce burnout, strengthen families, and create healthier generations. Guang Ming Whitley is the author of Zuo Yuezi: An American Mother’s Guide to Chinese Postpartum Recovery. Her interest in maternal health is deeply personal—her mother suffered from postpartum psychosis, and she was determined to approach her own postpartum experience differently. Through embracing the Chinese tradition of zuo yuezi, she discovered the transformative power of intentional rest, nourishment, and community care. A passionate advocate for reimagining how America supports new mothers, she weaves together cultural wisdom, personal experience, and practical guidance. Beyond writing, Guang Ming is committed to sparking conversations that reduce stigma around postpartum recovery and inspire systemic change. She believes that when we care for mothers, we create healthier families and stronger communities. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
