India is moving closer to one of its biggest conventional submarine programmes — the ₹70,000-crore Project 75(I) submarine deal with Germany. The proposed programme will see six advanced conventional submarines built in India by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) in partnership with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS).

In this video, we explain Project 75I, the India-Germany submarine deal, why the programme has faced years of delays, and what the next Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) decision could mean for the Indian Navy.

The submarines are expected to feature Air Independent Propulsion (AIP), advanced sensors, modern torpedoes, missiles and electronic warfare capabilities. AIP is particularly important because it enables conventional submarines to remain submerged for longer periods, improving stealth, endurance and surveillance capabilities.

We also examine the role of TKMS and Mazagon Dock, technology transfer, Make in India, indigenous submarine construction, India’s ageing conventional submarine fleet and the strategic importance of strengthening India’s underwater warfare capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region.

The India-Germany partnership also has a longer history: India has operated German-designed Type 209/1500 Shishumar-class submarines, with MDL having built boats in collaboration with the German side.

The video also explains why Project 75(I) matters for India’s maritime security, defence indigenisation and strategic competition in the Indian Ocean, making it an important topic for UPSC CSE, UPSC Prelims, UPSC Mains, defence aspirants and international relations/current affairs preparation.

Topics covered: Project 75I, P75I submarine deal, India Germany defence deal, TKMS, Mazagon Dock, Indian Navy submarines, AIP submarine, Air Independent Propulsion, Make in India defence, submarine technology transfer, Indian Ocean security, China submarine activity, maritime security and UPSC current affairs.
