Shakespeare wrote for an audience. The Sonnet Man shows us why that audience could still be us. Devon Glover, known worldwide as The Sonnet Man, is a Brooklyn-based rapper, poet, teaching artist, musician, and arts educator who brings Shakespeare to life through Hip Hop. For more than two decades, Devon has used music and poetry to make classical literature accessible, relevant, and exciting for new audiences.
As The Sonnet Man, Devon performs Shakespeare’s sonnets in their original form before transforming them through original Hip Hop, revealing the rhythm, emotion, and contemporary relevance within Shakespeare’s language. He has performed and led thousands of workshops across more than 40 U.S. states, four continents, and more than 20 countries.
A graduate of Ithaca College, Devon has worked as a rapper, poet, director, sound designer, and text coach, creating original work for organizations including Flocabulary, Arts Partners, Southern Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare Behind Bars, and Salty Shakespeare. He is a patron of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, an associate member of the Shakespeare Theatre Association, and a longtime teaching artist and arts advocate.
Devon was featured on NBC’s Today Show, bringing national attention to his innovative approach to Shakespeare. At the heart of his work is a simple belief: everyone has a unique voice and a story worth sharing—and sometimes the best way to discover it is to find your own rhythm.
