The Patience Behind the Polar Bear | Rhiannon Lawler
Join me live on Sunday 25th October at 7pm UK time (3pm New York, 12pm Los Angeles) for a conversation with landscape, wildlife and drone photographer Rhiannon Lawler.Rhiannon's photograph "Holding On" shows a polar bear clinging to a small iceberg off the coast of East Greenland. She took it with a drone from high above so the bear could get on with his day undisturbed, and it's since made the Top 101 of the International Aerial Photographer of the Year, been featured by the Smithsonian and been shortlisted in the British Photography Awards 2026.
We'll be talking about how she got started, from a Kodak 110 on family holidays to a borrowed Canon 5D Mark II in 2016, and how that led to Iceland, Greenland, Svalbard and Antarctica. We'll also cover what it takes to photograph polar bears, whales and seals responsibly from the air, what it's like sailing among the icebergs of East Greenland, and why her approach is to enjoy the moment first and then try to get the shot.
