19:43 Satie's first Gymnopédie
In this video, Matthew King explains what a Gymnopédie is, and why Satie's piano pieces (composed in the 1880s) are such radical works, and seem to usher in a new world. Matthew explains how Satie reimagined musical form, rhythm and harmony in these 3 extraordinary pieces, composed as if viewing the same musical object from three angles. The video goes on to look at the influence of Satie on later composers, with examples from Debussy, Ravel and Matthew King's own Gymnopédie-Sonata.
