Syrian Alawite minority protests turn violent after Homs mosque explosion
Three people have been killed and at least 60 injured during protests involving Syria’s Alawite minority.Demonstrations erupted in Latakia, Tartus, and Homs.
The protests were called by the head of Syria's Supreme Alawite Islamic Council following a bombing at a mosque in Homs during Friday prayers.
At least eight people were killed in the mosque bombing, and more than 18 were injured in the explosion in Wadi al-Dahb, a majority Alawite neighbourhood.
Tensions rose as clashes broke out between demonstrators and security forces, despite heavy deployments.
At least one member of the security forces was confirmed killed, with reports of additional fatalities still unverified.
The unrest underscores deep sectarian and political divisions a year after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, with many Alawites feeling marginalised since losing influence under the former regime.
The government is reinforcing security to prevent a wider sectarian escalation amid unresolved calls for justice.
