A Lab Tested Soundproof Wall Can Still Fail in Your Build

A wall can have an impressive lab-tested soundproofing rating and still fall short once it's built.
Why? Because lab conditions don't account for construction mistakes, rigid connections, or gaps that let sound travel around the assembly.
In this project, I walk through four details that can make or break sound isolation:
The clearance around HVAC duct chimneys.
Where one wall meets another.
Where the isolation wall meets the ceiling.
The roof eave and its airtight connections.
Getting these details right takes more than good drawings. They have to be communicated to the trades and inspected before they're covered up.
The lab rating is the ceiling. The construction details determine how close you get.
