9/11 Trial Explained: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's Pakistan Link, CIA Detention & 2028 Date | Spotlight

Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the man the US accuses of masterminding 9/11, is finally scheduled to face trial. The military commission at Guantanamo Bay is set to begin in June 2028, nearly 27 years after the attacks. In this Spotlight edition, Daniela Laurel explains how this is not simply a terrorism prosecution. It is also a legal battle over CIA black sites, waterboarding, coercive interrogations, military commissions and evidence gathered during years of secret detention. KSM was captured in Pakistan in 2003, transferred to Guantanamo in 2006 and formally charged in 2008. A 2024 plea deal collapsed after political and legal intervention. Now, as the case moves toward trial, one question looms: can justice for 9/11 finally be delivered after decades of delay?
