LOOMING Alberta teachers strike + Grocery bills rise higher
On today’s episode of The Candice Malcolm Show, guest host Kris Sims takes a closer look at the showdown between the Alberta government and the teachers’ union, and the soaring food prices that are forcing more Canadian families to rely on food banks ahead of Thanksgiving.Nearly 90 percent of Alberta teachers voted to reject the provincial government’s latest offer — a deal that included a 12 percent raise over four years, 3,000 new teachers, and 1,500 classroom aides. Starting salaries would rise to $71,000 and move above $110,000 after nine years, making Alberta teachers the best-paid in Western Canada. Despite that, the Alberta Teachers’ Association turned it down, setting the stage for a province-wide strike as early as October 6.
Kris highlights what this means for Alberta families, with more than 700,000 students potentially locked out of classrooms again after already suffering through pandemic closures.
Plus, with Thanksgiving just around the corner, many Canadians are shocked at grocery store prices, from beef and turkey to canned goods and baking staples. Food banks have reported working families lining up at dawn just to feed their kids.
To break it all down, Kris is joined by Dr. Sylvain Charlebois — better known online as The Food Professor. He explains why beef prices are surging more in Canada than in the U.S., how foreign imports are undercutting Canadian ranchers, and why Ottawa isn’t stepping in to stop it.
