Seit mehr als fünf Monaten blockiert Iran den Schiffsverkehr in der Straße von Hormus. Nach Angaben aus Teheran haben sich Iran und Oman nun auf eine neue Route durch die Straße von Hormus geeinigt. Sie würde Iran deutlich mehr Kontrolle über die Wasserstraße geben. Die USA waren nicht an der Einigung beteiligt.„Wenn dieses Modell tatsächlich durchgeht, dann würde das bedeuten, dass das iranische Regime massiv gestärkt wird“, so die Einschätzung von ARD-Korrespondentin Katharina Willinger. „Nicht nur finanziell, sondern auch für zukünftige Verhandlungen.“
