Грибок, превращающий муравьёв в зомби, давно стал известен в интернете. Но новое открытие изменило всё, что учёные о нём знали. Оказалось, этот гриб прячется внутри обычного мха, который растёт на деревьях и стенах повсюду — даже далеко от заражённых муравьёв. Значит, мох — не просто случайное место гибели: возможно, он играет важную роль в этой истории, служит тайным убежищем или даже местом, где разные грибы встречаются и обмениваются генами. Это открытие превращает историю о простом паразите во что-то гораздо более странное. Но есть и другой вопрос — тот, что тихо тревожит исследователей. Единственное, что не даёт этим грибам поселиться в человеческом организме, — высокая температура тела. Но планета нагревается, и один из грибов уже приспособился выживать при более высоких температурах.
