Blood pressure and cholesterol aren’t necessarily the best predictors of longevity. One of the most important health markers is something most doctors aren’t even testing for: VO2 max.

VO2 max measures how efficiently your body uses oxygen during maximum physical exertion, making it an excellent biomarker for heart health, metabolic health, and longevity. It reflects your body’s health reserve and can help predict not only how long you will live but also your quality of life as you age.

One of the best ways to improve VO2 max is the Norwegian 4x4 workout.

How to do the Norwegian 4x4 workout on a bike or treadmill:
1. Warm up for 10 minutes.
2. Exercise at high intensity for 4 minutes, reaching 85 to 90% of your maximum heart rate.
3. Reduce the intensity significantly for 3 minutes.
4. Repeat the high-intensity and recovery intervals for a total of 4 rounds.

Aim for 1 to 2 Norwegian 4x4 workouts per week, depending on your age and fitness level. Zone 2 training and weight training should also be part of your exercise routine to help improve VO2 max and support long-term heart health.
