Para contener a Saladino, forjó alianzas con el conde Felipe de Alsacia (conde de Flandes), los bizantinos y señores locales. Erigió el castillo de Le Chastellet en el Vado de Jacob, un punto de cruce clave en el río Jordán. Sin embargo, su lepra avanzaba, amenazando su mando.
