In der Nacht vom 02. auf den 03. August 1944, also vor genau 82 Jahren, wurden 4.300 Sinti und Roma in den Gaskammern des Vernichtungslagers Auschwitz-Birkenau ermordet. Für sie und die insgesamt bis zu 500.000 Todesopfer der beiden Volksgruppen während des Nationalsozialismus fand in Auschwitz eine Gedenkveranstaltung statt. Die Überlebenden und die Nachfahren der Opfer wiesen dabei auf die gegenwärtig zunehmenden Anfeindungen gegen ihre Minderheit hin. Auch in Deutschland wurde an das Schicksal von Sinti und Roma im Holocaust erinnert.
