When we think about accessible public transport, we usually picture ramps, wheelchair spaces and tactile signage. But what if the biggest barrier isn't the infrastructure at all?Drawing on his lived experience as a blind traveller and his work as an engineer, inventor and founder of accessibility technology companies, Santiago Velasquez argues that truly accessible transport depends on something we've largely overlooked: the connection between travellers and drivers. By redesigning this critical part of the system, he shows how accessibility can become more reliable, more inclusive and more empowering for everyone.
Santiago reveals why accessibility isn't just about removing physical barriers — it's about designing systems that work for the people they're meant to serve. Santiago Velasquez is an electrical engineer and inventor whose work focuses on designing systems that make the world more accessible. Drawing on his lived experience of vision impairment, he applies engineering thinking to challenges around mobility, navigation and independence.
Santiago founded the technology companies EyeSyght and Hailo, developing tools that address accessibility barriers across transport, education and employment. His work examines how everyday systems can be redesigned to work for more people, more reliably. In 2022, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to research best practice in accessible public transport internationally.
Born in Colombia and now based in Australia, Santiago brings a global perspective to questions of access and inclusion. His work challenges the idea that barriers are inevitable — and instead asks what becomes possible when accessibility is treated as a design choice, not an afterthought.
