Dos oficiales japoneses corren por un campo de arroz con la katana en alto, compitiendo a ver quién corta antes 150 cabezas chinas. El periódico de Tokio lo publica con estadísticas, como si fuera un partido de fútbol. Esto no es una peli de terror: pasó de verdad, y fue solo el aperitivo de lo que le esperaba a la ciudad de Nankín.En 1937, en pleno avance japonés por China, el emperador Hirohito ratifica en persona que los prisioneros chinos dejan de estar protegidos por la ley internacional. Traducido: si no hay prisioneros, no hay reglas. Lo que viene después son seis semanas de matanzas, violaciones masivas y una ciudad ardiendo por los cuatro costados, mientras un empresario alemán del partido nazi levanta una bandera con la esvástica para proteger a 250.000 refugiados chinos, los que él pudo, ya que sabía que era lo único que los japoneses no se atreverían a tocar.
Te cuento cómo varios de los responsables acabaron en la horca tras la guerra... y cómo otro, mucho más importante, se libró del juicio gracias a un pacto político y terminó jugando al golf hasta los 93 años.
Dato que no sale en el título: el "Reguero de los Diez Mil Cadáveres" sigue siendo hoy una zanja real que se puede visitar en Nankín, dentro del memorial dedicado a las víctimas.
