Preserving dignity—and hair—in brain surgery | Rupa Juthani | TEDxEmory

For decades, patients have been told that the loss of hair is a small price to pay for a successful brain surgery. But does it have to be a choice?

In the fairy tale of Rapunzel, her strength, identity, and power lived in her hair. When it was cut, her magic was extinguished. As a neurosurgeon who performs minimally invasive, hair-sparing brain surgery, Dr. Rupa Juthani has seen how this story reflects a deeper truth about healing.

Her talk explores how preserving a patient’s outward appearance can influence confidence, identity, and recovery through both conscious and unconscious pathways. Drawing from operating room experiences, research, and psychology, she shows how small surgical choices that protect dignity and self-image can reduce psychological trauma and support physical healing. This talk reframes surgical success by challenging us to care for the whole human, using compassion and image as powerful tools in recovery.

Dr. Rupa Juthani is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurosurgeon practicing with Neurosurgeons of New Jersey and as a Clinical Assistant Professor at NYU Langone. Dr. Juthani has advanced expertise in minimally invasive treatment for brain tumors and skull base surgery, specializing in endoscopic skull base surgery, laser surgery, and brain and spine radiosurgery. She treats a wide range of complex conditions including pituitary adenomas, skull base tumors, meningiomas, gliomas, brain metastases, cavernous malformations, arteriovenous malformations, and trigeminal neuralgia. Dr. Juthani serves as the Director of Endoscopic Pituitary and Skull Base Surgery at Valley Hospital.
