A Persona 4 remake was something that I never thought I actually wanted, but after watching the new trailer for Persona 4 Revival, I can safely say that my curiosity has been piqued. Persona 4 is a timeless game. Outside of graphics and a few lines of dialogue, there’s nothing about this game that has aged particularly poorly. To me, remakes should be saved for games that would genuinely benefit from a second pass, and Persona 4 just isn’t one of those experiences. I just don’t see much of a point in trying to improve something that’s already good unless your goal is to go into a radically different direction. My biggest fear for Persona 4 revival was that it would struggle to justify its own existence since the previous versions of Persona 4 were already great. While I’m not fully sold on the idea just yet, what we’ve seen so far does look promising. Though it’s a bit difficult not to feel at least a little uneasy because I remember this song and dance all too well.

I remember how excited I was when Persona 3 Reload was announced, only for it to not at all live up to the promise. Something that might look good in a trailer might not fully translate in the context of a finished product. Because of this, I want to keep my expectations a lot more reasonable. Fool me once, but it won’t happen again. If you’re someone who’s over the moon excited for revival and only wants to hear a guy talk about how good it looks, then this video isn’t for you. Persona 4 is my favourite game ever made, not just because of one specific facet, but because of the experience on the whole. Changing small, seemingly meaningless details of art might not sound that drastic, but it can fundamentally alter how that art is perceived. I might have a slightly more optimistic view on this game than I did a year ago, but that doesn’t mean everything shown is worthy of praise. It’s important to voice concerns now while Atlus has the chance to make changes, and in the case of Persona 4 Revival, there’s certainly room for improvement.

I want to love Persona 4 Revival. Persona 4 Revival is the brand new Persona 4 Remake. Though it might be more accurate to call Persona 4 Revival a Persona 4 Golden Remake. Persona 4 Revival is a game that many people have anticipated, myself included.
