This talk only represents the speaker's approach to and understanding of perimenopause and menopause interventions, health, and disease risk. We've flagged this talk because it falls outside the content guidelines TED gives TEDx organizers. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdf

Footnotes:

6:02: Clarification: While researchers have since challenged many of the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative findings on HRT, the relationship between menopausal hormone therapies and cancer risk remains contentious and an ongoing field of study. Hormone therapy for menopause and perimenopause has been shown to be safe and effective for many, but individual benefits and risks can vary based on medication type, patient age, family medical history, and other factors. 6:16: Clarification: There is an important distinction between (1) FDA-approved menopausal hormone therapies that use bioidentical formulations and (2) compounded drugs marketed as “bioidentical hormones” which are not FDA-approved and have known risks of inconsistent dosing and purity. As noted by the FDA, “The FDA does not have evidence that compounded ‘bioidentical hormones’ are safe and effective, or safer or more effective than FDA-approved hormone therapy”:

Most women in midlife are told their symptoms are normal, manageable, or all in their heads. When they show up exhausted, anxious, gaining weight, and unable to sleep, the standard prescription has become a familiar trio: birth control, a glass of wine, and antidepressants. In this talk, Esther Blum names a pattern she has watched repeat for thirty years across her clinical practice. She calls it the prescription pad of misogyny, a quiet pattern in which the medical system has been trained to medicate women into compliance rather than investigate the hormonal shifts beneath their symptoms. She has watched too many women lose years of their lives to a system that was never built to listen to them. The talk asks women to stop translating their bodies into something more palatable, and to start demanding the kind of care they have always deserved. Esther is an Integrative Dietitian, Menopause Expert, and host of The Midlife Realignment podcast. For three decades, she has helped thousands of women master menopause through nutrition, hormones, and self-advocacy.

Esther is the bestselling author of See ya later, Ovulator and Cavewomen Don’t Get Fat. Known as Gwyneth Paltrow’s menopause mentor and cited by Forbes for helping women thrive, Esther has appeared on the Today Show and ABC-TV. She is frequently quoted in goop, Time, and Bazaar.

She holds a BS in Clinical Nutrition from Simmons College and an MS from NYU. Esther is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Dietitian-Nutritionist, and a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS). She is a member of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians in Functional Medicine.

Esther lives in CT with her family, where she enjoys cooking, hiking, and blasting 80s music by the fire pit. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
