Una foca monaca avvistata e fotografata a largo di Ravenna. L’evento è una notizia che arriva proprio nei giorni in cui sono stati divulgati i dati sul riavvicinamento di questa specie ai litorali italiani: la foca monaca è un animale in via di estinzione e al 2023 erano stati stimati appena 700 esemplari viventi in tutto il mondo ma stanziale stanziali in parte nell’Atlantico e nel Mar Egeo oltre che nel Mediterraneo. In Italia sono state avviate varie attività di monitoraggio per studiare la presenza della specie nel bacino anche grazie alla collaborazione tra Fondazione Acquario di Genova, università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca e «Gruppo foca monaca Aps» che ha permesso di rilevare la presenza di 64 esemplari vicini alle coste italiane di cui 55 validati tra il 2023 e il 2025. L'avvistamento all’inizio di dicembre del primo esemplare vicino alla Riviera romagnola è dunque rilevante alla luce delle ricerche svolte.«Possiamo dire che questo è il primo avvistamento certo e ben fotografato nell’alto Adriatico sulla costa italiana. La presenza tempo fa fu notata in Veneto ma non ci sono dati e immagini così nitide. È invece nota la presenza della specie in Istria, molto probabilmente questo esemplare proviene da quel bacino», spiega Simone D’Acunto, direttore del Cestha, il centro sperimentale per la tutela degli habitat. «La cosa interessante è che la presenza non è legata al cambiamento climatico come avviene per la tartaruga Caretta Caretta quando nidifica sulla costa», continua. La foca monaca un tempo viveva in tutto il bacino del Mediterraneo. Il Cestha è intervenuto su richiesta del reparto carabinieri biodiversità di Punta Marina che hanno di fatto avvistato l’esemplare durante un’ attività di perlustrazione: la foca è emersa vicino alle spiagge, prima di essere immortalata.
