I take refuge in Lord Chandrashekhara,
whose bow is the magnificent mountain of jewels,
whose dwelling is upon the summit of the silver mountain, Kailasa,
whose serpent ornaments produce a beautiful ringing sound,
and whose arrow is infused with the power of Vishnu and Agni.
He swiftly destroyed the three cities of the demons
and is worshipped by the hosts of the gods.
I take refuge in Chandrashekhara.
What can Yama, the Lord of Death, do to me?

whose two lotus feet are fragrant with the flowers of the five sacred trees,
whose forehead eye produced the fire that burned Manmatha, the god of desire,
whose body is covered with sacred ash,
and who destroys worldly existence while remaining eternal and imperishable.

who wears the beautiful hide of the mighty elephant as His upper garment,
whose lotus feet are worshipped by Brahma, seated upon the lotus, and by Vishnu, the lotus-eyed Lord,
and whose matted locks are cooled and sanctified by the drops of the waves of the celestial Ganga.

whose earrings are formed by coiled serpents,
who rides upon the bull,
whose glory is praised by great sages such as Narada,

and is the destroyer of death itself.

the friend of Kubera, the lord of the Yakshas,
who destroyed the eye of Bhaga,
whose body is beautifully adorned with serpents,
and whose left side is beautifully embraced by Parvati, the daughter of the Mountain King.
He has a blue throat from holding the deadly poison,
carries the axe,
and holds a deer.

who is the medicine for those suffering from the disease of worldly existence,
who removes every kind of calamity,
who destroyed the sacrifice of Daksha,
who embodies the three Gunas and possesses three eyes.

and destroys the accumulated mass of all sins.

water, earth, fire, air and space,
along with the Moon and the principle of life.

who is devoted to its preservation,
and who ultimately withdraws the entire manifested universe into Himself.
He dwells within all worlds
and joyfully sports day and night,
surrounded by hosts of Ganesha and divine attendants.

This hymn was composed by Markandeya, who was overcome by fear of death, and is recited in the presence of Lord Shiva.
Whoever recites this sacred hymn wherever they may be
will have no fear of death.
Chandrashekhara grants that devotee long life, good health and abundance in all desired blessings.
And ultimately, Chandrashekhara grants liberation effortlessly.

The central message of Chandrashekhara Ashtakam is fearlessness through surrender to Shiva.
The repeated line —
“Chandrashekhara Ashraye, Mama Kim Karishyati Vai Yamah”
means:
“Having taken refuge in Chandrashekhara, what power can death have over me?”
