Disponible jusqu'au 03/12/2025Cette relecture postcoloniale du parcours du docteur Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965), l’un des pères fondateurs de la médecine humanitaire, théologien et prix Nobel de la paix, interroge sa notoriété en mettant en lumière le rôle de sa femme, Helene.
Figure illustre du XXe siècle, le médecin, théologien et pasteur alsacien Albert Schweitzer se fait connaître dès 1913 par la construction de son hôpital à Lambaréné, au Gabon. Lauréat du prix Nobel de la paix en 1952, théoricien du concept de "respect de la vie", cet humaniste a éclipsé pour la postérité celle qui a toujours œuvré à ses côtés, sa femme Helene. Abandonnant une carrière d’enseignante pour devenir infirmière, elle contribue à fonder avec lui l’établissement et dirige au quotidien les opérations. Depuis l’Europe, sa santé l’empêchant de retourner en Afrique après la Première Guerre mondiale, elle s’occupe des dépenses et de l’approvisionnement en médicaments et matériel médical. À travers l’itinéraire du couple Schweitzer, ce documentaire interroge un mythe en l’inscrivant dans le contexte colonial de l’époque.
