Lou Hudson's Late Career Highlights with the Lakers
January 8, 1978 - After the Hawks relocated from St. Louis to Atlanta, Sweet Lou Hudson became the first cornerstone star of the team's Georgia era. A six-time all-star, Hudson peaked as a shooting guard who could go out and get you 27 points and 6 rebounds every single night. The end of Hudson's time in Atlanta happened to coincide with the franchise's decision to rebuild. With Hubie Brown & Co. looking to slide in the direction of youth, Hawks general manager Mike Gearon did his best to set Hudson up for the twilight of his career by sending him to Atlanta for a modest return in Ollie Johnson.
"We are going to build toward a really young team," Gearon said at the time. "It’s going to take several years to rebuild and we’re going to have to be committed to younger players. We thought that Lou, who has been our most popular player as team captain, would deserve a better fate than he might have with us the next couple of years. We wanted him to play someplace where he could play with a championship team. We didn’t talk to anyone else.”
Hudson stepped into a reduced role in Los Angeles under head coach Jerry West. In two seasons with the team, Hudson averaged 11.8 points while playing a touch over 24 minutes a night. In the game above against Indiana, Hudson finished with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
After his second season with the club, the Lakers parted ways with Hudson, clearing the runway for their own youth movement with the emergence of Norm Nixon & Jamaal Wilkes and arrival of Magic Johnson & Michael Cooper.
