Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 attacks, is set to face trial on June 5, 2028, at the US military commission in Guantanamo Bay. A US military judge has scheduled the trial nearly 27 years after the 9/11 attacks and more than two decades after Mohammed's capture.
The trial date comes 18 months later than the January 2027 date sought by prosecutors. The judge said additional time is required to resolve pretrial disputes, including disagreements over what evidence can be presented in court. The case could still face further delays if key deadlines and milestones are not met.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is accused of developing and directing the plot to hijack commercial aircraft and crash them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, while another hijacked aircraft crashed in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the September 11 attacks.
The video also looks at the Guantanamo Bay military tribunal, the failed plea deal, the death-penalty issue, pretrial evidence disputes and the long legal battle surrounding the 9/11 case.
Mohammed will face trial alongside Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali and Mustafa al-Hawsawi. A previous trial date in 2021 was canceled, while a later plea agreement that could have spared Mohammed and two co-defendants from the possibility of execution was ultimately blocked following further legal challenges.
