How Nazi Regime Finally Collapsed
How did Nazi Germany go from dominating Europe to dragging jet fighters across airfields with farm animals?By 1944, the Nazi war machine was collapsing from the inside. Allied bombing had devastated Germany’s synthetic fuel industry, leaving advanced aircraft, tanks, and military vehicles without enough fuel to operate. At the same time, the Red Army was tearing through the Eastern Front, Western Allied forces were pushing into Germany, and critical industrial regions were being lost one after another. Germany still possessed some of the most advanced weapons of World War II. The Me 262 became the world’s first operational jet fighter. The V-2 rocket reached speeds and altitudes that Allied defenses could barely comprehend. Tanks like the Panther were terrifying when they worked.
But technology couldn’t solve Germany’s deeper problems. Fuel shortages crippled training and transportation, mechanical failures consumed valuable equipment, millions of horses still carried supplies behind the front lines, while poorly trained Volkssturm units were eventually sent into battle with whatever weapons could still be found.
As defeat became inevitable, Hitler refused to accept reality. His Nero Decree even ordered Germany’s remaining infrastructure destroyed rather than allowing it to fall into Allied hands.
On May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany finally surrendered, but the collapse of the regime was only the beginning of Germany’s struggle with the destruction, crimes, ideology, and human consequences left behind.
