ZOLLDEAL: EU schluckt bittere Pille! Industrie in Sorge! Politik müsse nun dringend gegensteuernDie Einigung im Handelsstreit mit den USA ist für die Europäische Union eine ernüchternde Lektion in Sachen Machtpolitik. Am Ende fehlte der EU der nötige Einfluss, um die USA unter Präsident Donald Trump zu einem Abkommen nach ihren Vorstellungen zu bewegen. Stattdessen hat sie nun am Sonntag einem Deal zugestimmt, der für sie gerade noch tragbar ist - aber eindeutig zugunsten der USA ausfällt. Die Vereinbarung über einen pauschalen Zollsatz von 15 Prozent nach monatelangem Stillstand ist damit ein Realitätscheck für die Bestrebungen der 27 EU-Staaten, sich als eine Wirtschaftsmacht zu etablieren, die es mit den USA oder China aufnehmen kann.
Diese kalte Dusche wiegt umso schwerer, als sich die EU lange als Export-Supermacht und Verfechterin eines regelbasierten freien Welthandels inszeniert hat. Die eigenen Ambitionen und die Realität klaffen nun jedoch weit auseinander. Zwar ist der neue Zollsatz deutlich erträglicher als der "reziproke" Zoll von 30 Prozent, mit dem zuvor Trump gedroht hatte. Er dürfte eine Rezession in Europa verhindern, wird die Wirtschaft aber wahrscheinlich in einer Flaute halten.
