Cunewalde liegt malerisch in der Oberlausitz. Bis nach Bautzen ist es nicht allzu weit, die Grenze nach Tschechien ist um die Ecke. Das Dorf hat Annehmlichkeiten, die manch Kleinstädter neidisch werden lassen: Ärzte, Schulen, Bankfiliale, Supermarkt, Kulturhaus, Gaststätten. Bürgermeister und Gemeinderat haben in der Vergangenheit offenbar vieles richtig entschieden.Nur eine Sache fehlt: die große Turnhalle. Die ist nach einem Brand vor drei Jahren nach wie vor gesperrt. Zwischen Landkreis und Versicherung harkt es. Die erfolgreichen Handballer müssen deshalb auswärts antreten.
Heimvorteil hat jetzt ein siebzehnjähriger Rennfahrer, der ein paar Starts mit seinem Erfolgswagen übt auf Cunewaldes Autocross-Rennstrecke. Zugezogen sind in jüngster Zeit viele Familien, auch in eines der typischen Umgebindehäuser mit jeder Menge Sanierungs-Stress. Selbst im Freibad ist zur Winterzeit etwas los. Eisbader wagen sich ins kalte Nass. Organisiert von der "Jugendbrigade" des Freibades, jungen Cunewaldern, die in ihrem Dorf das ganze Jahr über etwas bewegen.
