Merz speaks about a "program of freedom" | MSC 2026 | BR24

In his speech, Merz spoke of a "program of freedom" for Europe, comprising four points. Point one, he said, was the goal of strengthening Europe militarily, politically, economically, and technologically. This, he argued, would reduce dependencies and vulnerabilities. Merz's second point was a fundamental strengthening of Europe: "We must put an end to the proliferation of European regulations so that we are not held back in competition." At the same time, he praised the recent free trade agreements.

Thirdly, Merz addressed the relationship with the USA. He described the relationship between Europe and the USA as "a rift, a deep chasm." Merz demanded that the transatlantic partnership be redefined. This partnership, he said, must be "tangible, not esoteric." He indirectly addressed the policies of US President Trump: "We do not believe in tariffs and protectionism, but in free trade."
