Diketahui sistem pertahanan laser berkekuatan 100 kilowatt itu dijuluki Iron Beam.
Menteri Pertahanan Israel pada Rabu (17/9) Katz menyebut, Iron Beams akan beroperasi setelah menyelesaikan pengembangan dan uji coba yang sukses.
Uji coba tersebut dilakukan terhadap proyektil, termasuk rudal, drone, mortir, dan pesawat terbang.
Sebagai informasi, Iron Beams ini dikembangkan bersama Rafael Advanced Defence Systems dan Elbit Systems Israel.
Menurut Kementerian Pertahanan Israel, intersepsi laser jauh lebih murah, yakni masing-masing senilai $5.
Adapun jumlah itu dapat diabaikan dibandingkan dengan rudal, yang masing-masing harganya sekitar $50.000.
Laser, senjata seperti Iron Beam, menggunakan sinar foton terkonsentrasi untuk menghasilkan efek destruktif secepat cahaya.
Dilaporkan, sistem ini memiliki sumber energi yang berkelanjutan.
Meski demikian, jangkauan efektif sistem ini biasanya rendah, hingga 10 km.
Sistem ini berguna melawan UAV kecil, roket, dan mortir, tetapi kurang efektif melawan ancaman balistik berkecepatan tinggi.
