The tiny icy world known as 2002 XV93 is less than a quarter the size of Pluto and only about 292 miles wide, far too small to possess enough gravity to hold an atmosphere according to conventional expectations. Yet when the object passed in front of a distant star in January 2024, astronomers observed the starlight fading gradually instead of disappearing instantly. The strange effect suggests that 2002 XV93 is surrounded by an incredibly thin layer of gas, estimated to be between 5 and 10 million times thinner than Earth's atmosphere.
