Sinopsis: Phil Lodge, un ex policía, acepta un empleo como portero en un lujoso edificio de apartamentos en Nueva York, llevando consigo a sus dos hijas, Violet y Rose. Antes de mudarse, Violet pierde a su profesora favorita, asesinada en el mismo edificio. Poco después de que Phil comience a trabajar, los residentes empiezan a desaparecer misteriosamente, y Rose desarrolla una extraña fascinación por Walter, el portero excéntrico que también practica magia negra.
