Mariés en 1969, John Lennon et Yoko Ono forment pendant plusieurs années un couple presque inséparable. Alors qu’ils traversent une crise en 1973, Lennon quitte le domicile conjugal et part vivre avec May Pang, sa jeune assistante personnelle. Médiatisée à l'époque comme une parenthèse d’excès en tous genres, leur relation, qui dura dix-huit mois, amorce une période prodigieusement fertile pour la star sur le plan personnel et artistique : le chanteur renoue avec son fils Julian, travaille sur les albums Mind Games, Walls and Bridges et Rock ’N’ Roll, et compose "Whatever Gets You thru the Night", l’un de ses plus grands succès en solo.
