Pergantian nama Burma jadi Myanmar dilakukan oleh junta militer pada 18 Juni 1989 silam.
Militer beralasan, pengubahan nama sebagai bentuk upaya mereka meninggalkan warisan kolonial sekaligus menyatukan 135 kelompok etnik yang diakui resmi bukan hanya Burman.
Namun ternyata langkah ini menuai kritikan karena nama Myanmar disebut memiliki arti sama dengan Burma, hanya saja lebih formal.
Para simpatisan pro-demokrasi mengatakan bahwa pergantian nama tersebut tak sah karena tidak diputuskan oleh rakyat.
Akibatnya, banyak negara yang menentang junta militer dan terus menyebut negara tersebut sebagai Burma dan ibu kotanya Rangoon.
Namun pada 2010-an, rezim militer memutuskan melakukan transisi negara menuju demokrasi.
Lambat laun, banyak pemerintah asing dan organisasi internasional mengakui Myanmar sebagai nama resmi.
Meski begitu, beberapa negara masih ada yang menggunakan nama Burma.
