Previously we have covered the Rise of the British East India Company (https://youtu.be/_SHhiEISRrE), how the conquest of India started (https://youtu.be/HTUbi3h7-4g), and how India and Tipu Sultan resisted it (https://youtu.be/NoMJjyJpq-w) and how it made entire China addicted to opium (https://youtu.be/lkPZPu7t38c). Britain conquered much of India with Indian soldiers. In 1857, thousands of those same troops turned their weapons against their British officers. What drove them to rebel, and why did the uprising fail? In the final episode of our East India Company series, we follow the Indian Rebellion of 1857 from sepoy resentment to the brutal struggle for Delhi, Kanpur and Lucknow. Religious fears, annexations and controversial rifle cartridges helped ignite a conflict that brought soldiers, dispossessed rulers and civilians into revolt. Discover how Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor, became the rebellion’s symbolic leader, why some Indian armies and princes supported Britain, and how divided leadership weakened the rebels. Through desperate sieges, relief expeditions and reprisals, the fighting transformed the future of the subcontinent. The rebellion failed to end British rule, but it destroyed the East India Company’s authority over India. Its aftermath brought the fall of the Mughal dynasty and the transfer of power to the British Crown, beginning the British Raj. Why did the soldiers who helped build Britain’s Indian empire turn against it? And how did Britain survive a rebellion within the army it relied on to hold its empire together? This is that story.
